ABSTRACT

For the past ten years, the phrase "human trafficking" in Bangladesh has been used to address a wide variety of crimes and human rights abuses associated with the recruitment, movement, and sale of people into a range of "exploitative" and/or "slave-like circumstances". This chapter describes a process that was carried out in Bangladesh that has allowed those working in the anti-trafficking sector to develop a comprehensive "human trafficking" paradigm for adults and a clearer sense of conceptual clarity. It provides an expanded framework for better articulating a concept of "second generation" thinking for the trafficking sector within Bangladesh. The Thematic Group has shown that an effective, positive process can be established to reconceptualize and outline a new way of looking at the human trafficking sector in Bangladesh. A Thematic Working Group-format can be used to reduce "political/ideological" tensions that often plague the trafficking sector.
