ABSTRACT

A study of the situation of trafficked Bangladeshi women and children in India was carried out during 2000 and 2001, sponsored by International Organization for Migration (IOM). To track down and identify the trafficked women to India, investigations were carried out in brothels, rehabilitation centers, and slums. While poverty and economic factors were important in motivating people to migrate or in making them easy targets of "trafficking," the economic factor may be compounded by other social factors or special circumstances. The women and men who lived and worked in New Delhi were very uncertain about their lives and livelihood as the political party in power was against undocumented migrants, especially those from Bangladesh. In the name of rooting out migrants from Bangladesh, Bangla-speaking persons, including Indians, have often become victims of anti-Muslim sentiments from certain political parties and law enforcing agencies.
