ABSTRACT

I n an article published in 1995 on the Mediterranean Hotel, we were able to show how the hotel existed at three locations in succession, the first on the east side of Hezekiah’s Pool, the second near Damascus Gate and close to the British Consulate, and the third just inside Jaffa Gate. 1 The first and third of these locations are clearly marked on maps of the time produced by explorers or in guidebooks, which allowed us to be certain as to the exact identification of the buildings that housed the premises of this hotel. The second location, however, remained elusive. The suggested situation was largely based on the description of the hotel given by the Palestine Exploration Fund’s explorer Lieutenant Charles Warren R.E. in the account of his stay there during his archaeological work in Jerusalem between 1867 and 1870. 2
