ABSTRACT
Timba is largely made and consumed by urban black Cubans, and produces songs which make copious references to Afro-Cuban culture through music, language and topics. But timba is by no means the only type of music danced and listened to by black Cubans. It does not bear inscribed on itself any natural relationship to black ethnicity, and cannot boast an exclusive right to its representation.
