ABSTRACT

31st. On Sunday, October 31st, 1820, we hoisted all the boats and as soon as the pilot had come on board in answer to the usual signal, the Vostok weighed. Although no pilot put in an appearance on the Mirnyi despite our request, Mr Lazarev also weighed and followed in our wake. Both vessels hove to and awaited the Captain of the Port, Mr Piper, who was coming on board. During our stay in Sydney we had met with the greatest kindness at his hands, and we bade him farewell with hearty cheers, and having saluted the fort, which replied, we made sail. Mr Piper, not satisfied with all the friendliness which he had already shown us, hurried to his country house, which we had to pass on the way, 1 from where he fired a final salute from his small guns. With great regret we left the town where during the whole of our stay we had passed so pleasant a time.
