ABSTRACT

Well known for multi-faceted careers are the early members of what has become known as the London Pianoforte School. This chapter recognizes Muzio Clementi not only as a composer, pianist and teacher but also as a piano manufacturer, music publisher and conductor. The composer and pianist John Baptist Cramer helped found a music-publishing house that exists to this day. Other important but less widely known mid-Victorian pianists composed, obtained conservatoire teaching positions, produced musical editions, and published writings on music. The standard line in contemporary accounts presents Arabella Goddard as a performer of 'fantasias and music of a like class' until her association with Davison, who proceeded to expand her knowledge of classical repertoire and eventually control her programming. The legacy of Arabella Goddard remains firmly within the realm of pianist–interpreter. She represents an early example of the modern concert artist.
