ABSTRACT

Multiculturalism has undergone a profound crisis in the last decade, but nevertheless there is also ample evidence that it continues to play an eminent role in the Americas – albeit in a considerably different manner. This article deals with ways of understanding and conceptualizing the transformations in how cultural identities are constructed and mobilized in negotiating political, economic and cultural power in contemporary society. We propose to study these dynamics in the theoretical and methodological framework of a Bourdieu-inspired model of the field of identity politics.
