ABSTRACT

Henri Pousseur is noteworthy as a pioneer of electroacoustic music and it is the specific relationship between his analogue electronic music and open forms. One composer in particular – Pousseur – has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to open forms and their potential use in all musical genres. In this chapter, the author presents some of the results of a project he undertook concerning Pousseur's tape composition Scambi. He examines Pousseur's methods of composition and encourages the creation of new versions of Scambi. The author analyses the methods of realization by the composers in order to establish how they function within Pousseur's carefully conceived system. He considers the consequences of creating new versions using the technology to which most contemporary electroacoustic composers have access. The author concludes by outlining the project's next stage in relation to another, very different collection of open electroacoustic works: his Huit etudes paraboliques.
