The Portuguese Military Orders, the Royal Power and the Maritime Expansion (Fifteenth Century)

There is a general belief among scholars that the military orders in Portugal, despite their religious inspiration and organization, had from the outset an intimate relationship with the Crown. I am referring, of course, to the Portuguese orders of Avis, Santiago and Christ; the Temple and the Hospital of St John, as international orders, lie outside the scope of this paper.
