ABSTRACT

This paper is an attempt to analyse the role and position which the brothers of Calatrava wished to create in the territories of the Galicio-Leonese kingdom. It is not a topic of major importance, but we believe we have filled a gap in the extensive historiography of the Order of Calatrava. There is an ample, upto-date bibliography on the Order's presence in Castile, and there is no lack of related studies of its activities in Aragon and Valencia. Its limited presence in Navarre and in Portugal is also well known, and there is some scanty information on its activities in the remote Baltic lands bordering Prussia. What has been lacking is a monographic study on the Leonese knights of Calatrava which would complement the work of the late Professor Derek Lomax on Las milicias cistercienses en el reino de León. 1
