ABSTRACT

The topic of this paper forms part of a long-term project begun by Anthony Luttreil and Julian Chrysostomides on the Greek inhabitants of Rhodes during its occupation by the Hospitallers between 1306 and 1522. 1 The most important source of evidence are those portions of the Hospital's archive that survive in Malta. 2 They include registers beginning in 1346 which contain numerous examples of land grants naming tenants, conditions and rents, and provide topographical details and information on contiguous landholders. This evidence in turn raises questions concerning land measures, coinages, settlement in town and country, place-names and surviving architectural remains.
