ABSTRACT

This chapter will deal with some of the genres that have been strongly associated with didacticism in music but with the emphasis on the social sense of teacher-pupil relationship, rather than, for example, the kind of self-sufficient personal training implicit in the exercise or étude – including those of the latter whose purpose was more than the basically digital. 1 Thus, solo teaching-pieces, duets and duos, and arrangements are included here because, although the last two categories do have a life outside the schoolroom, so to speak, they were particularly targeted for teaching purposes.
