ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a selection of music events and interviews that took place at various venues in Dublin, Limerick, Kerry and Meath between the years 1999 and 2001. These events were chosen because they featured domestic-based producers and, in a few cases, because they were nationally themed productions. One of the most immediate observations to be made by looking at live music listings in Ireland is that the range of music available does not reflect the dominance of international chart repertoire as suggested by the music industry statistics. The two traditional music events that took place in Dublin pubs were typical of what might be expected from informal sessions. The first selected classical event was a concert featuring the music of Gerald Barry, who in terms of international performances, publications and recordings could be described as one of the most successful of Irish-born contemporary composers.
