ABSTRACT

This selection of testimonies delivered by Christian Metz (1793–1867) begins with his journey to the United States aboard the ship New York, continuing through the period when Metz and his associates searched for a suitable tract of land on which to relocate the German Inspirationist communities, and then the founding and development of f rst, the Eben-Ezer Society and, after 1855, the Amana Society. These later testimonies of Metz increasingly focus on community matters, the discipline of members and various events, such as the deadly epidemic of 1850 that confronted the Inspirationists.
