The Musical Times as a Reflection of Novello's Editorial Policies

The different editorial style of The Musical Times (MT) and The Musical World (MW) is striking and the two periodicals are discussed and compared. This chapter analyses the editorial nature of MT in comparison with other similar English music and fine arts journals. It is seen that Novello's focuses on a limited facet of Victorian musical life while other publications embraced a wider viewpoint. If people compare MT to other contemporary music journals and fine arts periodicals, some of which also presented music supplements and catered to the amateur, striking divisions become clear. An examination of the choices of genres and composers made by MT reveals not only the preferences of this audience but, further, offers one profile of Victorian taste and aesthetics. Indeed, the relationship between editorial style and house journalism overlapped at an even closer level - in the music supplements added to the back of MT issues.
