ABSTRACT

The edition of the '48' produced by Samuel Wesley and Charles Frederick Horn in four books, of which Book I was first published on 17 September 1810 and of which the entire edition was reissued at least three times during Wesley's life, had more than 152 subscribers who collectively ordered more than 183 copies. The title-page of the first issue of Wesley/Horn declares that it was 'printed for the editors' by Robert Birchall, indicating that Wesley and Horn held the copyright of their edition and personally assumed the financial risks of its publication. Wesley's presentation copy to Muzio Clementi is in the library of Jamie and Michael Kassler, Northbridge NSW Australia. Although no documentation of the sale of copyright from Wesley and Horn to Birchall is known to have survived, such a sale presumably was occasioned by Horn's and Wesley's need for money.
