ABSTRACT

Samuel Wesley/Charles Frederick Horn appears to have been a tightly managed, small venture undertaken principally by the two editors with help from others, including engravers, proofreaders, printers and music sellers. For Wesley and Horn it was a major undertaking, both mentally and financially, and their reputations were at stake. The revisions made to this edition after its initial publication changed not only musical details but also the title-page and the printed list of subscribers. Wesley evidently maintained both a list of subscribers' names and a list of corrections to the music, as he entered additional names and these corrections into copies of the first issue by hand. The nature of the eight errors provides information about how Wesley and Horn prepared the edition and the strategy they implemented to maintain the accuracy of their musical text.
