ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the precepting chapters of this book. The book examines the dynamics of desistance among repeat adult offenders. It provides a phenomenological account of the psychosocial factors associated with desistance. The book explains a detailed account of the shifts that occurred in participants' offending, cognitions and social circumstances as they negotiated the transition away from crime. It synthesises and interprets the findings and assesses them against the backdrop of existing research and theory on desistance. The book outlines an empirically based model of the desistance process and to offer guidance to practitioners in the field of criminal justice. Finally, it closes with an extract from McNeil, who offered the following advice to other putative desisters: Stop using, be open-minded, look for a bit of inner strength or inner wisdom coz everybody has it.
