ABSTRACT

Many studies have stated that for the first time in history the violation of women's rights was visible during the war in the former Yugoslavia. Efforts made to collecting necessary data and in assisting women who survived the war violence have contributed in improving the mechanisms for the protection of women's human rights. This chapter addresses the role of feminists in instrumentalization and creation of images of women-victims of the war, as well as consequences of the manner the violation of women's human rights was presented in the war in the former Yugoslavia. In almost every analysis feminists have accused men that, while dealing with so-called general issues, they actually deal with men's issues only, completely ignoring women's problems or mentioning them sporadically, as different from theirs. In feminist and other academic studies based on the media information, the rape victim identity was created, valid exclusively for Muslim women, and sometimes for Croatian women.
