ABSTRACT

If 1700 was the final year of Cousser’s suite publications, it was the first year of Johann Fischer’s. it seems that the name ‘Johann Fischer’ was common in the German lands at the end of the seventeenth century. At least three composers with the name Fischer were working in the area during the 1690s: a Johann Fischer of Vratislavia, Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer and the augsburg-born Johann Fischer. it was augsburg-born Fischer who spent time in paris in the 1660s before the arrival of Cousser and, according to eitner, worked as one of lully’s copyists. 1 it is his suites that i shall now discuss; they include the last published collections of suites by a German musician that worked in paris during lully’s time. They also, as a body of material, contain arguably some of the best music by any of the German lullists.
