ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the photographic art installation which also features the image on the front cover of Las Violetas. It explores the role of the exhibition's website and how it serves to enhance our understanding of overall installation's variegated meanings. The chapter focuses on the doll exhibition and the performance. While Clavel's multimedia dolls were inspired by literature and the visual arts, they were also influenced by Mexican Lupita dolls. The chapter discusses how there is an uncanny resemblance between Julian's Violetas and the 'real' sex dolls created by the likes of Abyss Creations and Orient Industry. In the style of Terre erotique, L'Origine du monde, and Etant donnes, the spectators of Clavel's El origen del juego are encouraged to engage in metaphoric erotic play by interacting in peek-a-boo fashion with installation. Clavel was given Abyss Creations catalogue at the exhibition and what stands out in particular in this leaflet are the testimonials of clients who had purchased doll.
