ABSTRACT

Every year Sjntharawaathin’s pupils, myself included when I lived in Thailand, gather together to celebrate her birthday. After lunch, they will play music and sing songs, then the teacher will join in and sing the above poem to the melody known as ‘Khmkm Klom Lûug’, meaning ‘a Khmer singing a lullaby to their child’. The melody is simple, but the text is full of emotion for the pupils, particularly when it is sung for them by their own teacher.
