ABSTRACT

The metric enables a facilitator to tune in to the issues that a team needs to confront. It is appropriate when used with 'real' teams. The facilitator should use the data collected in the sensing interview to develop a profile of team issues. This can be done numerically. This chapter provides a structured format for collecting information about communication, efficiency and effectiveness. It helps in preparing for and planning team-building workshops. The chapter also provides a way of giving a profile of team issues built from comments from team members. The 'sensing interview' approach is part of the data collection process that precedes a team-building intervention. The purpose of sensing interviews is to identify the root causes of strengths and problems. Team sensing is a critical skill for organization development practitioners. The sensing interview to be conducted with each member of the team lasts for about one hour on the basis that what is said is anonymous but not confidential.
