ABSTRACT

There is a popular perception in France that contact with English will lead to syntactic borrowing. When it comes to the question of the significance of English influence, much work remains to be done on the diffusion of influence, borrowing through other channels and the involvement of other constructions. The book includes a broad range of phenomena and the kind of selective influence observed in the corpus could ultimately lead to noteworthy changes in French. It seems that the effects of influence from English are only likely to increase as a result of continuing Anglo-American linguistic prestige and the rapidly changing media landscape that increasingly fosters more direct contact. The book puts news agency translation on the map as an object worthy of investigation at the boundary of linguistics and translation studies.
