ABSTRACT

During his compositional career Tomas Luis de Victoria wrote twenty masses. Five of these appeared in the second of the fifteen publications he issued during his lifetime: the Liber Primus Qui Missas, Psalmos, Magnificat, ad Virginen Dei Matrem Salutationes published in Venice in 1576. In order of their appearance in this volume, these five masses are: Missa Ave maris Stella à4, Missa Simile est regnum coelorum à4, Missa De beata Maria à5, Missa Gaudeamus à6, and Missa Dum complerentur à6. The next masses to appear were: Missa Quam pulchri sunt à4, Missa Ο quam gloriosum à4, Missa Surge propera à5, and Missa Pro defunctis à4. These four works are found in the Missarum Libri Duo published in Rome in 1583. 38
