ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the issues surrounding culture as they apply to music education. In it we will be examining the meaning of the term culture, various sociological theories of culture, and the ways in which these might lead us to think about music in education, music teachers and their relationships with their pupils. Later we will exemplify this theoretical discussion by presenting vignettes of two pupils and their relationships with their music teacher drawn from research conducted in a secondary school in the East of England (Wright and Finney, 2006).
