ABSTRACT

This article describes a curriculum project designed to create opportunities for transformative educational experiences in relation to democratic and social justice ideals. The project used an empowering interactive art form, Forum Theatre, to explore the topic of bullying. Through the development of Forum Theatre scenes by eighth grade students in a social studies classroom in the Northwest, the project delves into the complex work of educators seeking to integrate theory and practice. This project demonstrates that using structured, interactive, meaning-making activities around topics significant to adolescents can provide opportunities for students to practice democracy.
