ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with a brief indication of the general relevance of the emergence of the field of 'science and religion' for the encounter between East and West. It focuses on a more particular aspect, namely the entanglement of theories of truth obtainable through revelation and claims about the immorality of all homosexual behaviour in Western Christianity. The chapter discusses both the Roman-Catholic teaching and Swinburne's claims about homosexuality in relation to the encounter between Christianity and the sciences viewed from a Foucaultian perspective. The upshot of the critique of the Christian teaching that all homosexual acts are immoral is not to support the view that religions only repress and the sciences only liberate in matters sexual. Such a view is unsupportable from a Foucaultian perspective on the discussion surrounding the issue of homosexuality in the encounter between Christianity and science.
