ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the case study of Clare. At the time of her ritual Clare was a student training for the ministry and working on her doctorate. As she drew nearer to completing her thesis, she began to talk about needing a ritual which would mark that ending for her. The theme of community and the involvement of other people were keys to Clare throughout the planning of the ritual. The space that Clare chose to use for her liturgy was her home, as a place where she felt rooted, and where she had done most of the writing. In the different feelings which Clare experienced there was a clear distinction between public and private worlds. Clare spoke of her ritual in terms of recognition and thankfulness for the point she had reached, and as a way of letting go and moving on.
