ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the cross-border journeys of one charismatic Lue monk, Phra Khru Weruwanpithak, or Khruba Khuen as his disciples call him. Ethnographically, it shows how his cross-border practices played a significant part in the revitalisation of Theravada Buddhism and the transportation of cultures across the borders of northern Thailand, eastern Shan state in Burma and southern Yunnan in China. Then the chapter also explores a short biography of Khruba Khuen, and traces Khruba Khuen's cross-border journeys. The life story of Khruba Khuen and his cross-border journeys reveals not only the significant changes that have taken place in those localities but also represent local memories and the history of those places. The historical investigation from a regional point of view has not only provided a deeper understanding of the social meaning of cross-border journeys of a charismatic Buddhist monk, but also given an insight into the consequences of this religious tradition for local communities and people's everyday lives across borders.
