ABSTRACT

As I write in 2014, the Dutch-language television programme Manneken Pis, has just come to the end of its first series. The programme aims, in the words of brusselnieuws, to ‘look for the person behind the tourist’, by picking some visitors to Brussels out of their anonymity and asking them to tell their life story. 1 Picked up at some of the capital’s leading tourist sites, the visitors are initially interviewed in a mobile studio, decorated with the image of the famous urinating fountain. A selected few are then filmed in their home country, demonstrating what is interesting, different, or special about the way they live.
