ABSTRACT

This chapter considers various printed editions of Giacinto Andrea Cicognini's famed Giasone, the first of them dated 1664, which do not include the libretto set to music by Francesco Cavalli in 1649 but consist of the text in prose. Giacinto Andrea Cicognini also constitutes a particularly significant case study for his role in spreading Spanish dramaturgy in Italy. He adapted and reworked numerous texts of the "Siglo de Oro" theatre. The prose versions of both Giasone and Glamori appeared after Cicognini's death in November 1649. The publishing of Giacinto Andrea's plays took place mainly between 1658 and 1664, when the Roman bookseller and publisher Bartolomeo Lupardi promoted a seven-volume edition of his Comedie. Other than Lupardi, among those who promoted Cicognini's work was the bookseller Gioseffo or Giuseppe Longhi, active in Bologna between 1650 and 1691, and who published all Cicognini's works for theater.
