ABSTRACT

The Rail Safety and Standards Board's (RSSB's) role is to provide leadership in the development of the long-term safety strategy and policy for the UK railway industry. The RSSB's Human Factors team has grown from one individual recruited in 2000 to a team of six professionals, all with first degrees in psychology and a Masters degree in either Human Factors or Ergonomics. The Rail Safety and Standards Board's structure is based on two directorates – policy and standards and safety management systems. RSSB manages the process whereby the industry sets railway group standards and facilitates and coordinates the industry input to technical standards for interoperability. RSSB is the central administrator of the safety management information system. The human factors team provides support and resources to the new system team to ensure that the development of both implementations schemes understands and incorporate human factors into the design needs.
