ABSTRACT

The human factors specialists were responsible for specifications, concept designs, and user testing validation, detailed designs, technical specifications, manufacture drawings, manufactures tender documentation and manufacture/installation support for workstations, furniture, storage, finishes and whole room environment. The York new integrated electronic control centre project faced enormous operational and human factors challenges not only from the need to integrate people and roles into a single environment but, at the same time, from the need to radically change the way in which staff worked. From the very first project meetings it was apparent that there were a number of human factors goals that needed to be achieved to meet the main project aims: integrate functions, roles and responsibilities, address user concerns and gaining user buy-in, create an acceptable open plan operations floor, and integrate new technology and working practices. Human factors specialists were responsible for establishing user groups, user communication processes and user involvement work programmes.
