ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the experience of Lloyd's Register MHA Limited (LRMHA) in addressing some of the integration and interface issues between the engineering and human factors activities in the UK railway industry. LRMHA employs over 120 professional staff with expertise including signalling, telecomm, infrastructure engineering, civil engineering, rolling stock, energy, safety and risk engineering, risk assessment method, system integration, independent verification and validation, and management consultancy services. The inclusion of the Ergonomist within LRMHA's Safety Engineering Team meant that both parties were in an ideal position to pick up this language and system knowledge. Some six months after joining the company there was an opportunity to undertake a presentation to LRMHA's Derby Office about human factors, as part of an away day. Instead of waiting LRMHA chose to employ a recently graduated ergonomist with some experience until a senior consultant could be found to lead the group.
