ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the individual driver's use of information. A cognitive work analysis approach was used in order to apprehend the constraints imposed on the train driver. A system safety approach is adopted in order to comprehend the train driver task. The group of drivers adopts a feedback style, waiting until they receive an indication or an alarm from the system before acting. In order to keep the driver in the loop, and to avoid automation surprises, it seemed necessary to try to improve the quality of the drivers' situation awareness within a system safety perspective. The video recordings were then shown to another group of drivers who had not been involved in the data collection process before. The camera was focusing on the automatic train control(ATC)-panel on the driver desk, in particular the two small displays with information from the ATC system indicating speed limits. The automatic train control system is seen as a necessary support system.
