ABSTRACT

Transport research laboratory has produced a methodology for the assessment of train driver visual strategies, on behalf of the Rail Safety and Standards Board. The eye tracker automatically tracks point-of-regard and the correlation of the raw eye position to the precise position on the scene, in real time. Calibration of the equipment will be carried out in the office before boarding the train. The only communication between the driver and the investigator will be in a situation where the driver wishes to discontinue involvement within the trial or during re-calibration at station stops. Questionnaires will be administered to participants at stages of the trials. Different routes are expected to be driven during the trials. The level of experience will differ between the various participants and a possible option will be to investigate driving experience as an independent variable. Prior to the study participants will be asked to read an information sheet containing instructions relating to the nature of the trial.
