ABSTRACT

This period covers Rachmaninoff's student days at Moscow Conservatoire until his final departure from Russia in December 1917. During this time he made 351 appearances in Russia (178 in recital, 43 as orchestral conductor, 130 as opera conductor), 45 in western Europe (39 in recital, 6 conducting) and 26 in America, 1909-10 (19 in recital, 7 conducting). Rachmaninoff first moved to Scandinavia, where he gave 6 recitals (his own music), and 6 concerto performances (Liszt 1 + Rachmaninoff 2, 2x; Rachmaninoff 2 alone, 2x; Rachmaninoff 2 + Tchaikovsky 1, once; Tchaikovsky 1 alone, once). Rachmaninoff's first season as a concert pianist full time, first in Scandinavia and then in the United States, where he finally settled. Scandinavia: 14 recitals and 1 concerto performance (Rachmaninoff 2 and 3); North America: 22 recitals (2 shared), 13 concerto performances (Rachmaninoff 1, 4x; 2, 8x), and 1 performance with Casals of the Cello Sonata.
