ABSTRACT

The Republic of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean to the east of the African continent. This chapter analyzes the Mauritian government's economic policy reforms. It compares Mauritius on a socioeconomic basis with South Africa, the African continent, the Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) countries, and developed countries. The chapter also analyzes the lessons learned for Africa from the Mauritian successes. Specific key socioeconomic indicators have been selected from databases of various organizations, such as the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and World Bank. Mauritius is ranked 72nd in the world and 2nd in Africa in terms of Human Development Index, with Libya the highest ranked African country in 2010. Poverty rates in South Africa have remained constant from 1995 to 2005 at approximately 41% of the population. In terms of GDP per capita, Mauritius is in the top 5 in Africa, and even better than the average if compared to the BRIC countries.
