ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the people of the Kalvarayan Hills and focuses on rituals in general and their significance in human society and the final section presents from an ethnographic perspective an elaborate account of the rituals of the people of the Kalvarayan Hills. The presence and practice of rituals can be perceived in various spheres of life: religious, liturgical, social, political, personal, communal, cultural, academic, and secular. A certain amount of money is paid to the Mooppan as a marriage tax and it is used for common celebrations in the village. The grown-up children cannot take part in the celebration of the second marriage of their father either. Children are a must in their social philosophy. Children are not only needed for economic or family reasons but also for attaining life after death. If the boy's relations intend to finalize the marriage proposal for the girl, a message will be sent from the boy's house to the girl's family.
