ABSTRACT

1 THE lagus is a water-bird, quite the opposite of the shearwater in its behaviour, for as much as the latter shuns a storm at sea, the former delights and frolics in it. It lives with equal pleasure on land or sea, flying and swimming, 1 in rather the same way as the otter occupies a position between animals of the wood and those of water. In Latin lagus is also used to mean ‘hare’. 2
