THERE are also a great many defensive positions for holding off an enemy, quite conveniently placed in the forests both by Nature and by human skill. It is in the approaches to these that the natives are more eager to destroy or capture a hostile army hastening towards them than to struggle against it at the expense of good citizens' lives, with the hazard of arms and hand-to-hand slaughter.
