ABSTRACT

YET even when they are pressed2 into flight by a force of armed horsemen, they still have ready enough wits to set up a new means of defence; they have provided themselves with pots full of caltrops, each with three or four iron prongs, and other sharp iron implements, which, as they run, they throw out behind them on the sand, meadow land, or snow, with the result that the pursuing squadrons of cavalry perceive impediments in their horses' hooves which make them incapable of chasing, destroying or capturing the fugitives as effectively; in fact it makes the horsemen them selves retire in utter futility.
