ABSTRACT

After the competition Medtner’s father took Nicolas to the Tyrol for a week’s holiday. They returned to Vienna via Salzburg, where they visited Mozart’s birthplace. To a postcard he sent the family from the city, dated 24 August/6 September 1900, Medtner added a revealing postscript: ‘If you are disappointed by the results of the competition, for heaven’s sake don’t let me see it!!!!!!!! It’s not I who am to blame.’
