ABSTRACT

Racial hostility and discrimination remain daunting to combat because of the strength and systemic character of US racism. Much of the everyday resistance of Asian Americans involves individual reframing and psychological opposition to at least some of the white racial frame and hierarchy, although such a transformation of an individual's thinking and feeling does not necessarily generate more overt antidiscriminatory actions. Such resistance has not yet created a strong and collective counter-framing to the white racial frame in most Asian American communities. The construction of a strong counterframe to the preexisting white racist frame is a daunting task and has yet to be fully accomplished by the majority of Asian Americans. Research on African Americans has long shown that creating a strong black self-definition and self-valuation can be a method of successful resistance to racism. Some Asian Americans have chosen to resist discrimination and stereotypes applied to them in very individual and personal ways.
