ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how Riot Grrrl initially manifested as a movement, what values it promoted, and how the movement was portrayed in the mainstream media. It determines which values of Riot Grrrl were transmitted widely in the mainstream: in other words, what things came to signify "Riot Grrrl," whether or not they are rooted in actual Riot Grrrl experience. The chapter analyzes the function of Riot Grrrl in Buffy at these two levels: it presents those values of Riot Grrrl feminism in the series, and it also presents the values erroneously associated with Riot Grrrl feminism in the media. Indeed, a central locus for protest in Riot Grrrl was music. Growing out of the punk music scenes in communities such as Washington, DC and Olympia, WA, Riot Grrrl began with all-girl bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile and Team Dresch.
