ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book offers readers the basic building blocks of understanding sustainable economic development: built environment issues, energy realities, and transportation planning options. It looks at the tools that can be used to find the common ground between economic development and sustainability. The book describes in-depth looks at four easily adaptable tools for sustainable economic development. It demonstrates that the current economic development toolkit can be adapted into one that takes into consideration the goals of sustainability. The book deals with a broader examination and review of the common strategies and challenges associated with the transformation of economic development activities into something more sustainable. It explores the process by simply considering and perhaps integrating environmental discussions within broader economic development efforts. The economy versus the environment debate has raged for decades in academic, policymaking, and practitioner circles.
