The Musical Manuscripts
There are comprehensive holdings of sketches and musical manuscripts for West Side Story in Leonard Bernstein Collection. This chapter highlights the music that was either cut or extensively revised. It describes the surviving cut numbers and provides an overview of the musical revisions of the whole show, scene by scene. One manuscript indicates not only that Bernstein changed his mind, but that there was also a direct musical link between the 'First Mambo' and the Mambo that was eventually used. The manuscript is part of a substantial bundle of sketches with the title 'Crystal Cave Fragments' that also contains much of the music that was eventually used for the Dance at the Gym. The Raminfull score and all the printed scores of West Side Story begin without the musical call to action starting straight in at the uneasy syncopated chords.
