Railings may be considered as a superior type of fence since they perform much the same function but in a more elegant way. There are also special barriers designed to prevent pedestrians and vehicles from coming into contact with each other, but these are usually specified by a highway engineer and would only enter a landscape contract as part of a car@ or lorry@parking project.
