ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns the safety responsibilities of flight attendants. Pilots are usually organizationally placed under a Vice-president of Flight Operations while the cabin crew is organizationally placed under a Vice-president of Sales or Marketing. The Federal Aviation Administration does have to approve the airline's syllabus for flight attendant training. Flight attendants are primarily concerned with three kinds of liveware—the other flight attendants, the cockpit crew, and their passengers. Flight attendants are professionally concerned with communication between themselves, with the cockpit crew, and with their passengers. Two categories of communication are involved in basic flight operations for flight attendants—flight deck-to-cabin communication and communication among cabin crewmembers. Emergency equipment, while seldom used, is of direct interest to the flight deck crew, cabin crew, and passengers. Communication between the cockpit and the flight attendants was limited and ultimately proved to be fatal. Flight attendants are required to be very flexible and versatile individuals.
